Resilient country living in the mountains of southern California...

From:       Rob.Balfour@noaa.gov
Subject:     Any reports of heavy rain, flooding, hail, strong winds?

We're trying to find ground truth/verification for flash flood and sever thunderstorm warnings that the
National Weather Service office in San Diego recently issued.

On the afternoon of Monday, August 16, 2010, a thunderstorm moved across Chihuahua Valley.
The only weather reports I've been able to find so far are either along or west of Highway 79
and were not near the strongest part of the thunderstorm.

I'm hoping that you may have heard of additional reports, or could direct this inquiry to others
in the Chihuahua Valley area.

In particular, I'm interested in reports of:

1. hail               (estimated/measured diameter and coverage/depth as well as start/stop times)
2. heavy rain     (estimated/measured amount and start/stop times)
3. flooding        (location, impact, and time observed)
4. wind damage (estimated/measured speed and description of damage)
5. lightning damage (started fire, split tree, etc.)

Any assistance you or they can provide is most welcome.

Responses can be sent by e-mail, phone, or in writing.

My e-mail address is:                           rob.balfour@noaa.gov

Rob Balfour, one of our forecasters, copied me on the emails to you trying to find out impacts from last week's thunderstorms.
If you are willing and able, there are two great ways to support the NWS in San Diego:
Become a weather spotter. Click here to learn how, and to take the online training and test if you wish: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/sgx/spotter/spotter.php (and when you are ready, click on Become a Weather Spotter).
If you have a full weather station, you can become a Mesonet provider: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/sgx/cpm/sdm.php?wfo=sgx
Think about this and when you are ready, go ahead and complete the training and sign up to be a weather spotter, and/or apply to the Mesonet. It is totally up to you.
Thanks for your help.
