MESSAGE 1:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

I am copying a thank you letter I recently wrote our fire department, and thought our neighbors would like to know what great dudes we have nearby at our service when we have accidents!!!!  :)

August 19, 2011

Dear Sunshine Summit Fire Department:
On August 4 a few weeks ago, I had an accident while lighting my stove and sustained 1st and 2nd degree burns on my face, hands, arms and chest. You were the first to respond and take care of me, and I just wanted to send you sincere thanks for everything you did.
You were all very professional and prompt, and you almost immediately put me, and my family, at ease. I am about 6 months pregnant and you were great about taking measures to make sure the baby was not in jeopardy, mostly by calming me down and explaining to me what was happening. The treatment of my burns from you was more than I received from the paramedics OR from the emergency room that night. You were all very knowledgeable, personable and amazing, and I am just so grateful you are nearby, providing the services you do!

Thank you so much for everything!!!

Subject: The latest on our "fire"fee
Date: August 24, 2011 8:09:24 PM PDT

Fire Districts Association of California
August 23, 2011

The latest on California politics and government:

(Originally distributed by Capitol Alert.)

*State board approves maximum $90 fee on rural homeowners

A state board responsible for rural fire protection on Monday approved a maximum $90 fee per house in sparsely populated areas, significantly below the $150 charge envisioned by state lawmakers in their June budget. (Download the board's SRA fee emergency regulations.)

Under the emergency regulation passed by the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection, the full $90 fire prevention fee would apply to homeowners in extreme fire zones. Those living elsewhere in state responsibility areas would pay $70 each year.

Monday's regulation includes $65 in credits that would reduce those fees, including $45 for those who already pay for local fire prevention through district fees or taxes.

The regulation appears to raise nowhere near the $50 million that lawmakers are counting on this fiscal year, and certainly not the $200 million projected annually thereafter.

Board executive officer George Gentry estimated that the regulation would generate about $30 on average for each of the 850,000 homes in state responsibility areas. That would equal $25.5 million before subtracting new administrative costs that could be as high as $12 million annually.

The fee structure is far from final. Gov. Jerry Brown has called for clean-up legislation that would allow the state to apply funds to firefighting costs rather than fire prevention measures. Board members acknowledged that their fee proposal was essentially a first draft since they must follow up with a permanent regulation later this fiscal year.

Fiscal conservatives, meanwhile, have vowed to sue the state to block the fire fee from ever taking effect. They believe the law is unconstitutional and represents a tax that should have been passed on a two-thirds vote, rather than a majority.

"I think we're going to find out those areas that we need to come back and talk about in October because we're going to get an earful," said Stan L. Dixon, the board chairman and former Humboldt County supervisor, referring to anticipated public reaction. "I don't think anybody expects that this package could be anywhere near perfect."

Hi! We are enjoying the E-mail news you send out to us.

We want to thank all the people in Chihuahua Valley who were so supportive for us during our sale of the ranch. Warren Dershem is the new owner and we know he will love living in the valley. We loved living with all of you and hope we can continue driving to the Valley to visit as much as possible. Jerry is now playing golf again with his sons who live near us. My dear Judi passed away last December 21st, so it has taken time to know I have time for me now. Am reading again and wanting to take water color after working on a book of poems I now have in the making. Had a bout with Pneumonia but am getting better so I can have my right knee replacement in September.  Like Helen Mitchell said to me"Join the Club!" Comes with age!!!! We miss the closeness of all our friends there. You are and always will be special friends to us.  Jerry will be eighty eight in three months so it is time for him to play golf again!!!!
Lovingly,
Vi & Jerry

Subject: Winds shift: 11,000 acre Eagle Fire now burning to northwest
Date:  July 25, 2011 6:10:36 AM PDT

Hello All,
Here is some info on the fire.
Nina

WINDS SHIFT: EAGLE FIRE NOW BURNING TO THE NORTHWEST
Greetings!

July 24, 2011 (San Diego's East County)-Cal-Fire is now battling the 11,000 acre Eagle Fire in a unified command with the Bureau of Indian affairs and the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

"The fire is burning in a mix of grass, brush, oak and pine trees in steep, rugged terrain on the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation and the Anza Borrego Desert State Park," said Cal-Fire's Roxanne Provaznik.  "The fire is moving toward the northwest and is visible from the desert community of Borrego Springs. Firefighters took advantage of the increased relative humidity and made significant progress. The Borrego Palm Canyon Campground and Trail have been closed, along with the Lost Valley Boy Scout Camp."

As of 8 p.m., the fire is 40 percent contained. There is no estimate yet on when full containment may be attained. A total of 1,771 personnel are fighting the fire that began in the vicinity of ERTC (Eagle Rock Training Center). Presently 82 fire crews, 67 engines, 13 helicopters, 6 air tankers, and 14 bulldozers are involved in the effort.

Citizens Oversight Projects has forwarded links to videos which show the start of the Eagle Fire:

Other videos can be found on this page, see links at the bottom for the most recent videos.

There have been five minor injuries to firefighters. Thus far firefighters have limited structural loss to one outbuilding, according to Cal Fire. There are currently no road closures or evacuation orders.

Cooperating Agencies include CAL FIRE, San Diego County Fire Authority, US Forest Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, San Diego County Sheriff's Department, California Department of Parks & Recreation, Cal EMA, California Conservation Corps, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and the California Air National Guard.
